National Honor Society Information

Algoma High School is proud to have a Chapter of NHS. Eligible students will receive notification along with the steps necessary to apply for membership.  An invitation does not guarantee membership as several steps are necessary to apply.  Please view the membership criteria below.
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the national organization since its beginning in 1921.

The following selection procedures will be used to determine new members of the National Honor Society:

After the first semester, the chapter advisor will request current grade point averages of all students.

Students who have a current GPA of 3.50 or higher and are of sophomore standing or above will be eligible for membership.

Eligible candidates will be required to access, complete and return an application for membership and the Student Activity Information Form. Candidates and parents/guardians of eligible candidates will be notified of their candidacy, where to access, and the requirements for completing the forms. Forms not completed and returned by the stated due date will deem the candidate ineligible for membership during the school year in which the notification took place.

Information on the Student Activity Information Form will be used to anonymously rate the candidates on leadership and service.

The form will ask for information regarding :

  • Co-Curricular Activities
  • Leadership Positions
  • Community Activities
  • Community Service
  • Work Experience, Recognition, and Awards

The chapter advisor(s) will compile each candidate’s most recent grades and photocopy each candidate’s transcript to further rate the candidates on scholarship.  Scholarship will be rated anonymously; the candidate’s name will be removed and replaced with a number.

A faculty council will be chosen to review and rate the candidates on:

  • Character
    • The candidate’s name will be given, and the council through discussion will determine if the candidate’s character is appropriate for membership in the Society.  Candidates not meeting this requirement will not be considered further for membership.  Basic concerns in this area include exemplary behavior and appropriate role-modeling.
  • Scholarship (anonymous ratings)
    • The candidate’s transcript and most recent grade report will be reviewed, and the council, through discussion, will determine if the candidate’s scholarly activities are appropriate for membership in the Society.  Candidates not meeting this requirement will not be considered further for membership.  Basic concerns in this area include levels of course difficulty and most recent grades.
  • Leadership and Service (anonymous ratings)
    • The candidate’s Student Activity Information Form will be reviewed, and the council, through discussion, will determine if the candidate’s leadership and service activities are appropriate for membership in the Society.  Candidates not meeting these requirements will not be considered further for membership.

Candidates will be notified in writing of their selection or rejection.

The selected candidate(s) will be inducted at a ceremony involving a banquet or informal gathering for parents/guardians, relatives and selected candidates. The induction ceremony is the only vehicle by which a selected candidate gains membership. Those students who choose not to participate in the ceremony will not be considered members of the National Honor Society.
