Algoma Venture Academy FAQ | Your Questions About AVA—Answered

Choosing the right school for your student can bring a lot of questions—and we’re here to help. From what a typical day looks like to how credits, transcripts, and college preparation work, this FAQ guide gives you a clear picture of life at Algoma Venture Academy and what makes our approach unique.

1. What does a typical day look like at AVA?
Each student’s day looks a little different, but there are some shared routines. We start with a morning advisory where advisors share updates and students set their to-do lists. After that, students follow their own schedules, choosing when and how they want to work on projects, academics, or skill-building. Some work in blocks, others in shorter sessions. AVA runs on the same schedule as the Algoma School District (7:55–2:59), but without rigid 55-minute class periods.

2. Will my student still earn the credits needed for graduation?
Yes! AVA students complete the same credit requirements as Algoma High School, but they do so through project-based learning and personalized pathways. Progress is tracked in our learning management platform, Headrush.

3. What does an AVA transcript look like?
Our transcripts focus on mastery rather than traditional letter grades. Instead of A–F, transcripts show the percentage of learning targets (state standards) a student has completed. They also highlight growth in “soft skills”—like communication, teamwork, and leadership—based on feedback from advisors and community partners.

4. Do colleges accept AVA transcripts?
Absolutely. AVA designed its transcript with input from other charter schools and post-secondary institutions. Graduates have successfully applied and attended technical colleges, UW schools, and out-of-state universities.

5. Can students take college credit classes while at AVA?
Yes! Students can enroll in dual-credit courses through Algoma High School, NWTC, and UWGB. They’re also eligible for programs like Rising Phoenix and Youth Apprenticeship.

6. Are AVA students eligible for scholarships?
Yes. We support students in applying for scholarships and can calculate GPAs when required.

7. What are excursions, and why are they important?
Excursions are experiences beyond the classroom—like community service, skill workshops, or cultural activities—that expand learning. They help students build leadership, strengthen relationships, and develop lifelong interests.

8. How does AVA prepare students for life after high school?
Every student completes an internship and a certification before graduating. Alongside projects and community service, these experiences connect students with mentors, professionals, and networks that prepare them for both college and careers.

Every family has unique questions—and we’re here to help.
